Mo Dilshad - 1000 Club Wickets

Mo Dilshad - 1000 Club Wickets

Richard Kendall1 Jun - 12:25

The numbers behind an extraordinary feat.

It was a momentous day on Sunday 31st May as Mo Dilshad claimed his 1000th wicket for WWCC.

Roll back almost eighteen years and seven Prime Mininsters to August 2008……a man called Mo played his first game for the club. The Sunday XI defeated Chessington CC that day, with Mo claiming 1/11 from 9 overs. Little did we know then just how many wickets were to follow.

A first 5fer followed the next year in 2009 with 6/12 vs the Foreign Office. Wickets continued to be accumulated, although the next 5fer didn’t arrive until 2013. It was that year Mo claimed the Ashley Trophy (most wickets in the club) for the first time with 65 victims across the season.

2014 was simply ridiculous as Mo took 118 (yes, one hundred and eighteen!) wickets in a single season for the club. There was a best of 8/32 vs Wibbandune, alongside nine (yes, nine!) other 5fers. That’s more than many people claim in their entire careers.

118 wickets was more than the next four highest wicket takers in the club combined, and is the only time in the last 50 years 100+ wickets has been completed in a WWCC season.

Higher recognition was to follow as Mo made his Surrey over 50s debut in 2016. Club wicket number 500 arrived in 2017 which could have been enough for some, but not Mo. An economical style of bowling lends itself to staying injury free and with enough turn, dip, guile and consistency to trouble even the best batters, the wickets continued coming at a rapid rate.

Between 2013 and 2025 Mo has claimed the Ashley trophy in 12 of those 13 years. It is a stupendously high success rate that may never be seen again.

Away from the wickets there have been multiple player of the season awards across the 2nd XI, 3rd XI and Sunday XI. No-one would bet against there being more in the future.

1000 wickets. An average of just 19. An economy rate of less than 4 runs per over. 5 wicket hauls on 38 occasions.

The numbers speak for themselves. Some say much of South West London go to sleep having nightmares about Mo twirling away, ball after ball, wicket after wicket. To his teammates though, even without the wickets Mo is an incredible contributor to the club.

Here’s to hopefully seeing many more wickets over the coming seasons!
