4. Grounds Qualifications

Why does a qualification help?

The single most important part of cricket is the pitch and we all have opinions on them. Yet so few are actually qualified to do so! Grounds management training helps to provide understanding of how to prepare good pitches and perhaps more importantly, how to avoid preparing bad ones.

Greater expertise in pitch preparation is something that WWCC desperately needs more of from our members. Many hands make light work and if we can increase our pool of volunteers who are able to help towards our pitch management strategy, we can improve the playing surface and make it a better experience for everyone.

Training Courses

Training courses are provided by the Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF) and the Ground Management Association (GMA). There are various levels available so regardless of previous experience there is a course for everyone.

  • GMA Online Training - see here. The courses provide an awareness and general understanding of the tasks involved in maintaining playing surfaces. They also show how technical aspects of turf maintenance can influence overall pitch quality, helping to create a suitable annual maintenance plan for their surface.
  • SCF Grounds Management Workshops - see here. Delivered by expert County Pitch Advisors these informative face-to-face sessions are open to anyone interested in grounds maintenance and include practical demonstrations (weather permitting), discussions, with ample time for questions.

WWCC are willing to subsidise the cost of available training courses.
